Linksys / Setup (2016)

WiFi is needlessly scary.
We made setup easy.

Once upon a time, to set up your WiFi you had to squint at a tiny QSG (Quick Start Guide for all you non-geeks), ponder and sweat and swear over wiring, and then type obscure numbers into a browser to start setup. It was terrifying.

I led the UX of Linksys’ first app-based setup, which ended up being the first app-based setup from a major router manufacturer. Our team worked together to create a setup so intuitive it won several accolades and enabled my mom to set up her own mesh network (!!!) with full confidence.

Since - at the time - downloading an app to set up a router and NOT plugging everything in right away was so novel, I realized that one of our first tasks was to break existing user mental models. This required us to reach beyond the digital setup process and work with the packaging team to design the physical unboxing experience - another fascinating challenge.
